Wayanad landslides: PM Narendra Modi promises all help, Kerala govt demands 'national disaster' tag

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited landslide-ravaged Wayanad and assured that the Centre would provide all possible assistance in the relief and rehabilitation efforts. The PM described the tragedy as "nature displaying its furious form"."The Centre will stand with the state govt in helping those who lost everything in the disaster," Modi said, asserting that no work would be hampered due to lack of funds."It's our social responsibility to ensure that the dreams of those affected are not shattered. The govt and the country are with them," the PM said.Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a statement that during the meeting with the PM, he had sought financial support for the rehabilitation of those who lost everything in the landslide and for assistance to combat climate change.

The CM also urged that the landslide in Wayanad be declared a "severe disaster" and "national disaster" as soon as possible.Modi said that even though his "heart was heavy" on hearing about the disaster, he came to Wayanad now as he did not want his visit to hinder the rescue and relief activities earlier. He said he saw everything in detail and that it was easier to make decisions "when you have first-hand information".The PM landed at Kannur airport in the morning and arrived in Wayanad at 11.47am aboard an IAF helicopter. PM Modi stresses need to formulate long-term schemesOn the way to Wayanad, the PM conducted an aerial survey of the landslide-affected areas of Chooralmala, Mundakkai, Punchirimattam and the origin of the landslide. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Union minister of state for petroleum Suresh Gopi and chief secretary V Venu accompanied the PM in the helicopter.Thereafter, the PM landed at the SKMJ school ground in Kalpetta at 12.15pm and then travelled by road to Chooralmala.Modi walked through the affected sites with officials, including chief secretary Venu, district collector D R Meghashree and ADGP M R Ajith Kumar, getting a firsthand view of the destruction caused by the July 30 landslide.The PM also visited the site of the destroyed Vellarmala School and the Bailey Bridge constructed by the Army. He spoke with the military personnel involved in the rescue operations.

Later, he visited the relief camp at St Joseph's School in Meppadi and interacted with survivors. In an emotionally charged atmosphere, tearyeyed survivors shared their grief with the PM, who comforted them by placing his hand on their heads, embracing them and offering words of solace, assuring them that the nation stands with them.Ayyappan, a survivor of the devastating landslide that swept through Mundakkai, said, “Twelve of us from the camp met the PM. There were children too. There was a person who was translating everything. I just asked for a home. He assured all help.”“I told him that nine members of my family were lost. We lost our land, but land is not the issue, I lost my family... 

The PM held my shoulders when I narrated my losses," said Ayyappan.The PM then went to Meppadi VIMS Hospital, where he met the injured. He embraced children, enquired about their well-being and offered comfort to the injured and their families before departing.At 4.00pm, the PM chaired a review meeting at the collectorate. Modi said he had been closely monitoring the rescue efforts in Wayanad and had been in constant touch with the authorities. He stated that disaster man agement funds had already been released and that the remaining amount would be released immediately.He also stressed the need to formulate new long-term schemes to support those affected, especially children who have lost their families. 

He expressed confidence that the state govt would play a crucial role in this, with full support from the Centre.The PM assured the people of Wayanad that the country and the Union govt would leave no stone unturned in restoring livelihoods in the region, including homes, schools, road infrastructure, and the future of children.The meeting, held in the collector’s chamber, was also attended by the governor, the CM, Union MoS Suresh Gopi, state ministers K Rajan, A K Saseendran, P A Mohammed Riyas, O R Kelu, chief secretary Venu, DGP Sheikh Darvesh Saheb, the district collector and ADGP Ajith Kumar.
